Habitat-Related Patterns of Productivity of the Foliaceous Reef Coral, Pavona Praetorta Dana
Chapter
Abstract
Reef corals contain mutualistic symbiotic zooxanthellae which photosynthesize and translocate photosynthate to the animal partner, although the animal is capable of tentacular feeding and other heterotrophic activities (Goreau, et al., 1971; Muscatine, 1973; Trench, 1974; Porter, 1974; Muscatine and Porter, 1976). Many workers have examined the photosynthesis of reef corals (McCloskey, et al., 1976) but habitat acclimation has generally been ignored.
