Influence of Odors on Human Mental Stress and Fatigue

Abstract

There have been few objective studies of the psychological effects of odors (Dodd et al., 1983). Torii and his colleagues (1988) studied the effect of odors on brain activity. They reported that the odor of jasmine increased the amplitude of contingent negative variation (CNV) due to a stimulating effect, while the fragrance of lavender, which is said to have a sedative effect, decreased CNB amplitude. Sugano (1990) reported that several fragrances increased cerebral blood flow, as measured by single photon emission computed tomography. In this study, we evaluated the effect of odoriferous compounds on mental stress and fatigue, and measured the subjects’ heart rate and the pupillary light reflex. The Profile of Mood State (POMS) questionnaire was also administered (McNaire et al., 1964).
