Coccal Cell Switching and the Survival and Virulence of C. jejuni at High Oxygen Tensions
Campylobacter jejuni is a microaerophile which demonstrates oxygen-dependant growth1 although atmospheric levels of oxygen are usually damaging. Under favourable conditions cell morphology is spiral but in stressful environments the cells often become coccoid in appearance. Reasons for this change have been investigated previously and thought to include light, medium components, and atmospheric oxygen tension. Moran2 proposed that toxic oxygen derivatives in the culture may trigger coccoid formation. The viability of these cells has been widely investigated using a variety of techniques, and these have variously suggested that the coccoids may be a degenerative or alternatively a dormant state.
