Abstract
The electromagnetic field of the incident photon alters the self-consistent potential in which the atomic electrons move. As a result, the photoionization amplitude becomes the sum of two terms. The first of these arises from the electron being removed by means of its direct interaction with the electromagnetic field, while the second describes an electron ejected as a result of the change in the self-consistent field.
