Abstract

Optical sensing schemes have shown particular promise for a wide variety of applications in civil engineering. Some advantages of fibre optic sensors over their rivals are their immunity to electromagnetic interference, distributed sensing capability and the fact that they can be embedded in and are compatible with various composite materials. An area of considerable interest has concerned the measurement of elongation/strain experienced by various in situ structural elements using optical fibres. Obviously, to operate effectively in such an environment the sensing fibre has to be suitably protected to not only withstand the rigours of the application, but also the rough treatment envisaged during transportation and handling. The approach proposed by THOMSON CSF was to form a fibre optic strain sensor by pultruding a protective coating around the sensing fibre.
