Investigating the Performance of Off-Axis Diffractive Optical Elements (DOEs)

Abstract

The behavior of DOEs used in an off-axis configuration has been investigated. The phase coefficients that are needed to establish the profile in the aperture for either on-axis or off-axis elements were determined. Detailed phase function design was done for on-axis wavefronts( 1,2). The option was to use the element with an incident off-axis wave or to design the phase coefficients specifiically for off-axis operation with the detector on the mechanical axis of the element as shown in Figure 1.
