Circular Intensity Differential Scattering of Native Chromatin: Theory and Experiments

Abstract

Due to their particulate nature, native biopolymers (such as membrane proteins or chromatin) tend to form an intensely light-scattering suspension. Scattered light is deviated from the beam axis at an angle great enough to miss the detector, resulting in (a) anomalously high optical density and (b) circular intensity differential scattering (CIDS), i.e., left and right circurlarly polarized light are scattered with different efficiences out of the photomultiplier (PM) window.
