Abstract

Antibiotics are among the most important and most frequently used drugs. In this chapter, the principles and the basic concepts of chemotherapy, i.e., the use of antibiotics to treat or prevent infectious diseases, are delineated. The reader interested in the specific use of single antibiotics and treatments of the various infectious diseases is directed to the vast specialized literature.
