Aluminum Stabilized Conductor in a Large Cryostable SMES Magnet

Abstract

An aluminum stabilized cryostable conductor concept for the 30Mw, 1800MJ superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system to be installed at Anchorage Municipal Light and Power (ML&P) is presented. Mid- and large scale commercial SMES magnets for utility applications have been actively studied at Babcock & Wilcox. Co-extruded aluminum stabilized conductor has been considered as one of the major alternatives for the ML&P SMES application because of its maturity in extrusion process, high RRR, relative low raw material cost and light in weight. However, many significant technical issues have been identified associated with using aluminum conductor in high field and high energy magnets. Critical design considerations are discussed in this paper.
