Toxic Effects of Ornithine and Its Related Compounds on the Retina
Recent studies revealed that intravitreous injection of L-ornithine causes severe damage in the pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells of experimental animals and that the clinical and histological appearances of the damage are similar to those of gyrate atrophy, a hereditary blinding disease caused by hyper-ornithinemia due to the deficiency of ornithine-δ-aminotransferasel. In order to see cytologic toxicity, several agents which are structurally and metabolically related to ornithine were injected into the vitreous employing the technique that has been described earlier.
