Effect of Maternal Protein Deficiency on Ganglioside Metabolism in Neonatal Rat Brain

Abstract

Malnutrition induced by a severe dietary protein deprivation in early life can retard subsequent neurological development in both humans and experimental animals (1). Although several laboratories have demonstrated that protein undernutrition in the newborn decreases the lipid, phospholipid, cerebroside and DNA content of brain (2–6) as well as retard sulfatide synthesis (7), little attention has been devoted to the effects of protein under-nutrition on ganglioside metabolism. Today I am going to discuss some effects on weanling rat brain ganglioside metabolism of severe maternal protein deprivation prior to and during gestation and lactation. Specifically,I will report the effects on the gangliosides, a representative ganglioside biosynthetic enzyme, UDPgalactose: GM2 galactosyl transferase and a representative ganglioside degradative enzyme, neuraminidase.
