Automatic and autonomous monitoring

Abstract

There are many instances in which traditional techniques for the monitoring of building structures can be unsatisfactory or unsuccessful. Traditional techniques are necessarily labour intensive and are, as a result of economic constraints, frequently incapable of producing a readily interpreted body of data. In difficult cases, building owners, operators and managers are not likely to be happy to meet the costs of engaging skilled personnel for extended periods even when they can accept the intrusion that the use of traditional techniques necessarily involves. When the phenomenon of interest requires close attention over a (moderately) extended period or when monitoring must be done in a discreet fashion, automatic and autonomous monitoring of building structures comes into its own.
