Abstract

Historically, digital systems have been designed with performance in mind Other cost functions such as area, testability, or energy consumption were mainly regarded as side constraints to be used in the design phase. It was only in early 90’s that the role of power consumption changed from that of a design constraint to an actual design metric. The reason for this shift is mainly technological: The combination of higher integration capabilities and higher speeds results in a considerable increase of the power consumption of modern chips. Coping with this increased power demand has become mandatory, because of two main factors.
