Abstract
This chapter discusses the static magnetic properties of the rare earth metals. These, in the general sense, are the macroscopic average response of the material to the microscopic interactions discussed in other chapters of this volume. The study of bulk features complements atomic scale experiments such as neutron diffraction, Mössbauer and other resonance studies and is often required as a basic aid in their interpretation. In the areas of direct overlap, the data obtained from bulk results are usually more precise due to the relative simplicity of the measuring techniques. Some of these attributes are apparent in the material to follow.
