Planned Unit Development Evaluation

Abstract

The planned unit development (PUD) was considered a new and innovative land development concept in the 1960s. The concept encompasses a number of planning and design notions: cluster designs for housing and greater densities in developed areas, provision for a range of housing types, mixed residential, industrial, and commercial uses, separate treatment of pedestrian and vehicular circulation systems, analysis of the landscape to identify areas most suitable for development, and the preservation or protection of areas for important environmental processes or features. These notions also include a set of assumptions which is broadly shared by planners and designers about the qualities of the resultant environment and about users’ perceptions of and attitudes toward such designed environments. This study reports on a user evaluation of a PUD in New Jersey, the Village of Pine Run (Figures 57 and 58).
