Buffer Memory Devices in the Measurement and Registration Center

Abstract

The main memory used in the FLAN measurement and registration center is the magnetic drum of a standard electronic digital computer. This storage system has a number of substantial advantages over other types of storage devices: It permits continuous monitoring of the information store, it is comparatively low in cost and economic to maintain, and it requires a minimum of electronic circuitry. However, the direct use of drum memory for the registration of events randomly distributed in time is highly inefficient due to the large access time (10 msec), i.e., the time to scan and locate the address characterizing a given event.
