Conductivity Data and The Structure of Solid Glasses

Abstract

In using the term “the vitreous state” to designate the state in which glass exists, we certainly wish to underline the distinction between this state and the liquid or crystalline states. There has recently been an attempt, by all those research workers involved in the study of crystalline bodies, to reveal the element of disorder in the particle distribution in them. The opposite can also be observed in the study of the liquid state: the attempt to reveal the element of order in the particle distribution. We can agree with Frenkel that before discussing the structure of one or other system we must consider the structure of that unit on which the model is based. It is not, however, sufficient to confine ourselves to three-dimensional geometrical mo-dels.
