Abstract

One of the most striking aspects of arriving in a new culture, community, or relationship is that it seems simultaneously fascinating and chaotic. We are confused by our mixed reactions and discover that we must reorganize our understanding of ourselves and find new ways to conceptualize and manage these unfamiliar experiences and situations. That kind or reorganizing is an ongoing part of all of our lives, and our capacity to do so is a particularly important aspect of what makes us distinctive as a species. In this process, we rely on our previous experiences, skills for coping with and prevailing over circumstances, and capabilities for learning.
