Child-Centered Correlates of Bullying and Victimization

Abstract

Although bullying is currently thought of as a group phenomenon, it would be unrealistic to say that the individual child makes no unique contribution to the cycle of behaviors that are involved in bullying and victimization. If we think of the bully’s behavior, it’s easy to see that the individual child contributes to the bullying interaction. It is much more difficult to appreciate the victim’s role in the bullying situation. When thinking about a child’s contribution to victimization, it is extremely important not to blame the victim. No child should be bullied for any reason. However, there may be individual child variables that increase vulnerability and it may help school staff to understand these variables when designing prevention and intervention activities.
