Abstract

Researches on the growth of graphite nodules in malleable iron have currently been based on the assumption that graphite nodules are spherical et al. 1954; Owen et al., 1956; Birchenall et al., 1956; Burke, 1959 (Burke and Min-Koff, 1983). With this assumption, equations derived for the growth were independent of the aggregated state of the graphite nodules. In practice, however, it is known that graphite nodules are multibranched and their aggregatedre ated state strongly affects the mechanical properties of malleable iron. Graphite nodules are similar to a cluster of diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA), impimplying that they have a fractal structure which is associated with their growth process.
