RF Power Amplifier Control and Linearization Techniques

Abstract

Energy is a valuable, and typically scarce, commodity in mobile communication systems. Since the total power consumption of these systems is often dominated by the RF power amplifiers, there is a growing demand for methods of enhancing the power efficiency of these critical circuits. Several techniques have been developed to enable the operation of the RF power amplifiers in more efficient, but less linear, modes while compensating for the degraded linearity by means of additional control circuitry. This chapter introduces some of these techniques, grouping them into three categories: control and linearization at the input, at the output, and at the power supply.
