Method of Performing Ultrasonography of the Neck

Abstract

The focus in this chapter is on the technical performance of thyroid ultrasonography, a noninvasive procedure that produces diagnostic and reproducible images. When properly performed, an ultrasound examination answers a clinical question:
  • Defines the shape, size and extent of a palpable nodule

  • Clarifies controversies about palpation

  • Detects a nonpalpable nodule

  • Monitors therapeutic goals

  • Facilitates aspiration biopsy

  • Provides screening for the patient with a high risk of thyroid carcinoma

  • Identifies early recurrence of tumor
