Switzerland’s Integration Policy
The EU is a major player in the economic, political, and security spheres, and its importance to Switzerland is destined to increase in the years ahead. Not to accept this fact is to bury one’s head in the sand like the proverbial ostrich, to the detriment of national interests. The objective of the Federal Council, in terms of integration policy, is accession to the EU, as Switzerland’s economic, political, and security interests in the twin contexts of Europe and globalization are best protected through this membership. For the time being, the Federal Council sets its priority on bilateral negotiation of sector-by-sector agreements. But the results of this approach remain uncertain because of the complexity of issues still under discussion. The following looks closely at the background of current bilateral negotiations and their content. At the same time the conditions for Switzerland’s eventual membership to the EU are being reviewed.
