Summary of the Issues Discussed
The workshop was convened to shed light on a relatively new development in modeling (third-party) safety, namely the assessment of societal risk (= SR). The ultimate question regarding safety in general and, thus, SR as well is: “How safe is safe enough?”. In his opening speech Werring 1 stressed that in the end decisions about risk, e.g. whether to transport dioxines/furanes by rail or road, are political decisions, however whimsical they may seem. On the other hand, he stated, policy makers need scientific information on safety that can help them to reach more objective judgements on this type of problems and solutions in safety-management.
