Cereal Processing in New Zealand
New Zealand has many advantages as a producer of arable crops. The temperate climate is reliably cool in winter and warm to hot in summer, and the soils are naturally fertile. Farmers are well educated and have access to modern technology. There are some disadvantages, however. The country is geographically diverse, which means that crop quality varies considerably between locations, and the principal cereal cropping areas are separated by sea from the largest population centres. Perhaps the major constraints on cereal cropping are the better returns for less risk in other forms of farming and the high cost of land.
