Abstract

This book is concerned with presenting the most recent algorithms for automatic modulation recognition of communication signals. Some of these algorithms utilise the decision-theoretic approach while the others utilise the ANN approach. In each approach, three groups of modulation recognisers are presented. The first is used for the recognition of analogue modulations only, the second is used for the recognition of digital modulations only, and the third is concerned with both analogue and digital modulations without any a priori information about the nature of a signal. It is found that the developed algorithms are able to distinguish between the different modulation types of interest at a SNR of 10 dB with overall success rate > 97.0% if the modulation types under consideration are analogue modulations only or digital modulations only. Meanwhile, the overall success rate is > 93.0% at a SNR of 15 dB if there is no a priori information about the nature of a signal; i.e. whether it is an analogue or a digitally modulated signal.
