In Part I we considered the basic principles and technology that underlie molecular medicine. This chapter on infectious diseases begins Part II in which we apply recombinant DNA technology to the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. For infectious diseases, the application of molecular medicine is both straightforward and dramatic. We can take any clinical sample and analyze it for the presence of foreign, nonhuman DNA. The source of the foreign DNA can be identified as to genus and species of the invading infectious agent.
