Addressing Resistances and Other Obstacles
The therapeutic recommendations that have been made thus far in this book have been designed to minimize client resistance. Throughout, there has been the general endorsement of an approach in which the therapist assesses clients’ existing purposes, values, and goals; designs interventions to be compatible with them; and avoids coming into conflict with them. Most importantly, the therapist demonstrates how alternative critic behaviors would better achieve the purposes the client has been trying to accomplish with maladaptive self-critical practices, and would do so without the negative consequences attendant upon those practices.
