Adaptive Regulation of Accommodative Vergence Interactions
The near-visual response consists of concomitant changes in accommodation, vergence, and pupil size. All three of these motor systems share a common organization of phasic-tonic control that characterizes their transient and sustained motor responses. This dual-control organization for accommodation and vergence is indicated by their open-loop decay time constants, which increase with closed-loop stimulus duration (Schor, 1979; Schor et al., 1986a). A phasic-tonic organization of pupil control has also been interpreted from observations of pupillary escape, which occurs with large but not small initial pupil size (Sun and Stark, 1983).
