Piezoelectric Lithotripsy: Experience with 511 Patients

Abstract

The EDAP LT-01 is a piezoelectric lithotripter employing ultrasound imaging. This presentation is a report of the experience of urologists treating 511 patients with urinary calculi using piezoelectric lithotripsy (PEL).

Six hundred twenty-three calculi (541 renal and 82 ureteral) were treated. Analgesia or sedation was not routinely used, and 67.5% of all treatments were performed on an outpatient basis. Eighty percent of patients with renal calculi smaller than 1 cm in diameter were stone free at three months. Eighty-one percent of patients with ureteral calculi (treated by retrograde stone manipulation followed by PEL) were completely cleared of stone, while only 27% of patients with ureteral calculi treated in situ were cleared by PEL alone. Ninety-three percent of 1,073 lithotripsy sessions were either pain free or caused only mild pain. Thirteen patients experienced ureteral obstruction following PEL. In seven cases the causative stone was originally calyceal and smaller than 2 cm in diameter.
