Chloroform Nephrotoxicity and Renal Uptake of Calcium
The pathology of necrosed cells from various causes such as ischaemia, chemicals, viruses and radiation is often similar and it has been suggested that intracellular accumulation of calcium is involved (Farber, 1981). Nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and myocardial necrosis, for example, are all associated with increased concentrations of intracellular calcium (Malloy, 1983; Berndt et al., 1984; Schanne et al., 1979). A major point of controversy however is whether the entry of untoward amounts of calcium through the damaged cell membrane is a cause or consequence of cell death (Fariss and Read, 1985).
