Ultra Structure in Pulmonary Hypertension

Abstract

A very characteristic feature of the human pulmonary vasculature is that it shows progressive intimai proliferation with age. This age-change was studied intensively by Brenner (1935). On histological examination he found it to be ubiquitous and extensive, involving both pulmonary arteries and veins. When one employs standard connective tissue stains such as Van Gieson’s reagents, the intimai proliferation appears relatively acellular and gives a tinctorial reaction for collagen suggesting that the process is one of progressive intimai fibrosis. It is of interest to look at the ultrastructure of this age-change intimai proliferation for it represents an integral part of the structure of the normal pulmonary blood vessel which is available to respond to a raised pulmonary arterial pressure.
