Transient Recovery Voltage in the Short Line Fault Regime
The basic phenomenon of the short line fault transient is outlined in relation to the line and source side oscillations. The concept of the typical sawtooth line oscillation is analysed in detail with respect to the line high frequency parameters. The equivalent line surge impedances are then considered in depth for both sequence and modal analysis and the effects of the line physical characteristics, such as conductor clashing, are examined.
The effect of line terminal capacitance is shown to reduce the severity of the transient, although the benefit is partially offset by the presence of line traps. Other related aspects, such as arc resistance and current asymmetry, are briefly considered. Additional terminal capacitance in the form of a short cable termination or shunt capacitor may be used to control the short line fault severity. Finally the relative severities of the line oscillation for single and three phase earthed faults are examined in relation to the ratio of the source 50 Hz zero and positive sequence impedances.
