Intensity Fluctuation Spectroscopy of Motile Organisms

Abstract

Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) — The determination of the velocity of microscopic particles from the Doppler shift of scattered laser light — has been applied primarily to the study of fluid or airflow problems in which the scatterers are passively carried along by the surrounding medium. Important biological applications of this approach, such as the study of bloodflow in arteries, will be discussed at this Institute by Professor Benedek. Similarly, protoplasmic streaming within large-celled organisms can be studied by scattering laser light from cytoplasmic particles carried along by the flow, and we will review some recent work in this area later in these lectures.
