Abstract

The Russell—Saunders terms of the free ion are usually denoted v 2S+1 L, the corresponding wave functions being |vS M S 〉|vL M L 〉, where M S = S, S − 1, ... , −S and M L = L, L − 1, ... , −L (cf. Section 2.4). If a ligand field characterized by symmetry group G is applied, the v 2S+1 L terms are split, in general, according to the reduction
