Do We Really Understand the Pt Isotopes ?

Abstract

The even Pt nuclei, lying in a well known transitional region between the deformed rare earth nuclei and the doubly closed shell 208Pb, have been one of the testing grounds of the IBA. Although many features have indeed been succesfully explained1 by the 0(6) limit of this model, with a tendency towards SU(3) when going to the lightest isotopes, there are still several unsolved problems in these nuclei and it is important to better understand where the model is successfull and where it is not (or not yet). The goal of this paper is to outline some of the remaining difficulties and to review some experimental data concerning the particle transfer reactions. The results shall be compared, not only to the IBA but also to other microscopic and geometric models. More details may be found in reference 2.
