Low Cost Control for a Flexible Manufacturing Cell
This paper presents the strategies adopted to provide control to an unmanned flexible manufacturing cell consisting of a CNC mill, a 6 axis robot and a PC controlled plugboard capstan lathe; the cell is able to cope with 6 different product types which can be presented to the system at random. Overall control of the cell uses the flexibility of the programmable controller to effect the control of the machines and sensors in the cell. The paper further presents how the control philosophy developed will allow such cells to be integrated into a large flexible manufacturing system under the control of a minicomputer.
