Minimum Threshold Current for an Injection Laser and Its Relationship with the Gain Factor

An expression is obtained for the minimum threshold current of a laser diode whose resonator length can be made as small as required. A method is described for the determination of the gain factor ß, using a single measurement of the threshold current of a diode with a sufficiently short resonator. The validity of this method is demonstrated by applying it to available experimental data.
