Syphilis

Abstract

Since its appearance in Europe over four centuries ago, syphilis has had a major impact on society. Its history is characterized by myth and superstition, and it has come to represent the prototype of venereal diseases that has been as associated with character weaknesses or debauchery as it has as a communicable disease.
