Searches for Light Scalar Particles in K Meson Decays

Abstract

One of the most perplexing yet fundamental problems in particle physics is the origin of mass. The very successful Standard Model of QCD and electroweak interactions begins to address this problem by incorporating the Higgs mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking to give masses to the vector bosons. In its simplest formulation, the minimal model, there is a single doublet of scalar Higgs fields which, by its Yukawa coupling to fermion fields, can also generate masses for the fermions.
