The Nature of Development: Implications for the Study of Individual Differences in the Development of Personality and Intelligence

Abstract

A problem which has faced students of development from the days of the Greek philosophers is that of whether the ultimate realities are fixed and unchanging, or whether — on the contrary — change is of the essence of things (Russell, 1946). The latter was the view of Heraclitus who held that everything is in constant flux, and who was credited with the dictum that we never put our feet into the same river twice.
