A Casual Glimpse of Evolution and Development Relating to the Limbic System

  • Robert B. Livingston

Abstract

It is reasonable to support a continuing inquiry as to how the several cerebral systems may account for certain mammalian and particularly human capabilities. Any answers are bound to be provincial, partial and preliminary. Traditional attention tends to focus on neocortex. It is more properly called isocortex since this wonderful convoluted sheet is not exactly new. It has been in the process of perfecting mammals and itself for more than 200 million years. It originated prior to mammals, but discloses its most florid expressions among them.
