General Theory for Collisional Effects in Quantum Beat Spectroscopy

Abstract

The effects of collisions on quantum beats obtained following sudden excitation of a multiplet of states which simultaneously decay to a lower state or a lower multiplet are considered. The photobeats are associated with single-photon decay, as opposed to two- or more-photon correlations and, as such, represent the effects of intra-atomic coherence [1,2].
