Level-Degeneracy Effects in Superradiance Theory

Abstract

Until now, all superradiance studies have been concerned with non-degenerate levels. So there is an interesting problem remaining to be solved: the influence of level-degeneracy on superradiance. Because of the coherent nature of the phenomenon, important interference effects can be expected: experimental evidence for the existence of such effects has been given in a recent work [1], in which quantum beats are observed on superradiant signals even where no coherent superposition of states has been initially prepared.
