Abstract

Two types of double optical resonance are described theoretically, and studied experimentally in sodium. One is a ladder-like set of states, and the other has two lower levels each coupled to a single upper level. The atomic steady state populations and the spectrum of the scattered light are determined as a function of the various atomic and laser parameters. It is assumed that the only damping is due to spontaneous emission.
