A Novel Technique for Resonantly Enhanced Sum-Frequency Generation Involving Rydberg Atomic States
Experimental evidence is presented that demonstrates the usefulness of atomic Rydberg states in resonantly enhanced, nonlinear optical mixing. This work provides verification of a recent prediction that large nonlinear optical susceptibilities can be obtained by applying a modest dc electric field to a medium in which the Rydberg levels are accessible by the laser fields’. This technique should prove useful in the development of new tunable coherent sources at wavelengths where conventional mixing crystals do not transmit.
