Far-Wing (N+1) -Photon Transition Formula for Variable Bandshape Laser
Interactions of near-resonant laser light with atomic systems involving fluctuations which lead to a Lorentzian power spectrum of the laser are quite well understood by now. However real lasers are affected by many independent sources of noise and commonly have a power spectrum more nearly Gaussian than Lorentzian, especially in the far wings of the line. This means that theoretical studies of band shape influences on multiphoton processes have direct experimental applications, for example to multiphoton absorption1 and ionization2 rates.
