On the Optical Soliton-Like Surface Phenomena in Dependence on Preparation Conditions of Matter
A special type of coherent interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter leads to self-induced transparency and the propagation of pulses with a stable envelope in gaseous and condensed matter. This phenomenon can be thought of as the propagation of solitons, a special type of quasi-particles. Slusher gave a survey of solitons in the volume case. Recently the possibility of the occurrence of surface wave pulses that reveal solitonlike properties was reported on[2,3].
