Quantum Statistical Properties of Radiation in a Free-Electron Laser

Abstract

Recently interest has revived in the quantum theory of free-electron laser devices. Most of these studies are, however, restricted to a free-electron laser (FEL) amplifier configuration. In recent papers [1,2], we considered the photon statistics of such systems and we showed that, in the small-signal dilute-beam regime, the photon distribution for the field exhibit some nonclassical features. In particular, photon antibunching is predicted and, under certain conditions, the state of the field is shown to be in a so-called squeezed state.
