On the Detection of Squeezed States
Two fundamental sources of quantum noise, photon counting, and radiation pressure limit the sensitivity of interferometric gravitational wave antennas. A detailed analysis of this problem was recently performed.1 It was shown that, with the relatively weak CW lasers presently available, photon-counting noise dominates. On shining a “squeezed-state” of the radiation field into the usually unused part of the interferometer, the photon counting noise can be decreased, while increasing the radiation pressure noise, thus allowing to optimize the sensitivity of the system.
